Portland - Day one

NPR's studio at the Portland Clothing exchange

Our first full day of programming has been highly improvisational, and featured interviews with a bevy of neighborhood residents and Ghosttown luminaries.

Before our interviews began Jon Brumit took the wireless microphone out onto the street corner and chatted with the neighbors. We played a litle rhytmic accompaniment as Jon attempted to start a few conversations during the first installment of the show he likes to call “The Old Lady”. (MP3)

Jon speaks with Edie Tsong

As Jon began making plans with Edie Tsong for her performance the next day we started off talking to Chuck Watkins (MP3). We discussed his walk in 1995 from Arkansas to Portland. Tonight there will be a party celebrating the release of a book transcribing a conversation that Sam Gould had with Chuck about that walk.

Michael Trigilio talked to Gary Wiseman who is an assistant to an eccentric millionaire whose name we will not mention (MP3).

We also managed to get Orion Gray, Development and Research assistant from Sister’s of the Road (MP3) to talk about community driven solutions to problems of class division, as well as her public affairs work on KBOO radio.

After Orion left Jon and Lee discussed numerous artistic ideas on an abreviated reprise of “The Old Lady”. In this episode we discuss the questionable state of Lee’s sanity, the clothing exchange, vitamin pendants, and the (as yet unrealized) radio program, “Sidewalk Caketalk”. (MP3)

When all that was done we ran across the street and invited Steve to join us. Steve lived at the Westwind Apartments right there, across the street from our broadcast. He did a little freestyling and then left us a bit abruptly to return to life at the Westwind. (MP3)

We ended the night by going to the Ghosttown “Open Kitchen” for a birthday party honoring Jen, one of the Most.. who you will be hearing more about later. At Jen’s party we met McCloud, and Hannah, and Katy, and Brian, and … and … so many new and friendly people… like Jen herself…. Some pictures can be found on flickr.
