After Bosnia… on to Spain

So the last travel post showed the Bosnian countryside whizzing past as we were on our way to Zoran’s friend Tamara’s lovely apartment in Bergamo, Italy. We arrived there about 2 AM and were out by 9 AM .. on to Barcelona.

After arriving in Barcelona we spent one lovely night with Isi and Rabia who later joined us in Tarifa for Fadaiat/ the borderline academy.

So 2 nights after that video was shot we arrived at the castle in the south of Spain just a few rough kilometers from Morrocco where the borderline academy was held. The castle was outfitted with a wireless network, and antennas for radar, radio, and an attempted wireless internet link across the straits of Gibraltar to Morrocco.

The castle was breathtaking, and we did make it over to Morrocco for a day after LeE and Jon performed a laptop duo in the castle courtyard for conference attendees (we’re working on getting a recording of that together). What we learned about Morrocco and the border between Europe and Africa was certainly a lot to assimilate. We expect there will be a few reports posted here from those of us who attended to help give a bit of a portrait of the experience, but for right now we want to be sure to link to the sound files from the broadcast we did at Tarifa.

The day of broadcasting began with a brief interview with Pili who works with indymedia and Fadiat and was participating in some of the work across the straits. Many thanks to Francisca for helping with the translation. (MP3)

After Pili finished we invited Pablo from Hackitectura on the airwaves to discuss the meaning of fadiat and the creation of indymedia estrecho as a 3rd cyberworld in between Europe and Africa. (MP3)

We did several interviews at fadiat, but few were more exciting than when conference attendees took over as they did in the next two audio samples.

Geert Lovink had just arrived…. and we had already discussed with Brian Holmes the possibility of appearing on our airwaves at some point …. so the two of them converged and held a very engaging 40 minute conversation about their mutual fascination for writing about things in motion that began with an account of Brian’s sailboating trip across the straits. (MP3).

After those two finished, Branka from kuda (and really at this point we might as well say she’s from NPR too) interviewed artist Luka Frelih about his Frida V project, among other projects (MP3).

And from there the Fortresses of Europe presented their project to all in attendance with a spotty wireless mic feeding the NPR transmitter.

We spent one more day in Tarifa after that, during which we saw some very interesting presentations from Ljudmilla, Conrad Baker, Geert Lovink, Brian Holmes and many others. Then it was a breakneck journey back to Novi Sad, so that we could make it to our July 1st presentation at B92 Rex center. More on that later. So stay tuned.
