Punk Rock and D-A-S-H

“Punk Rock” grafitti in Novi Sad
The essence of Punk Rock is everywhere here in Novi Sad. And we have been getting quite an education lately from Orfeas and Branka (who we’ve mentioned a few times before, because we’re so fond of them). Just moments ago the CD for a local Novi Sad band called Luna finished playing…and they sound nothing like that band with Dean Wareham of Galaxy 500… I think they’re better. Also of interest in the classic punk vein is an all female band called Boye, also Katarina 2, Disciplin A Kitschme (woo hoo), Problemi, Partibrejkers, Electric Orgasm, and many others…. In the now form there’s Red Union and Corrosia and we met a guy recently from a band called Doy Me Kokosh (which we were told means something like “Breast feed my chicken”. When we met the guy from Doy Me Kokosh at Izba bar last week he had just recently found himself on the wrong side of a collective beating from group of nationalist youth while putting up posters for the upcoming EXIT festival (which it looks like we will, sadly, be missing).

Jon with Philip and Igor at Izba
There are a whole host of other punk and new wave bands from Serbia in the 70’s through the 90’s that we hope to discuss and possibly share online with you all as we learn more and listen to more. The most exciting musical event of our trip so far however has to be the new band that Jon and Bojan have started called “Izvini”.

So we’ll probably listen to some of this music on the road to get better acquainted with it as we travel to Sarajevo for the Sarajevo Picnic and then on to Tarifa for the Fadaiat//Borderline Academy. And of course we’ll be bringing along our trusty transmitter and cables.

We’ll record everything we can and put it right back here.. So keep checking in for more pictures and audio fun.
