A new radio station in Novi Sad
So it’s been a few days and we’ve been a bit busy for blogging, but now we’re on again, and we couldn’t be more excited.
Most recently, Saturday the 11th , we did a broadcast here in Novi Sad with kuda.org, and even though our combined Serbian is not so very good, it still seemed that the programming was top-notch and that all in attendance had a wonderful time. Our greatest respect goes to kuda.org for putting together such a strong program of events. We have no doubt that the radio station that is left here will have no shortage of people to fill the air time with quality programming.
So what follows are photos and audio clips of the entire schedule. This is our best attempt at recreating the event for those who couldn’t be there. We hope that we may be able to provide some more detailed descriptions for both our English and Serbian visitors.
The whole afternoon began with some sound that Jon recorded of a house party that was going on in the flat below ours the night before. The whole thing went on until daylight and kept Jon and I from resting very much, but it does provide us with the first image sound combination of what we hope will be a regular feature. Jon will record some found sounds, and LeE will take a picture to accompany it. Here is the sound (MP3) and the image……

mini disc recorder recording the all night party below us on Friday night.
So after a little turbofolk from the night before Menshevicks’ Kruzok took hold of the studio and produced a 45 minute show entitled “Submedia for Subhumans”(MP3) complete with musical interludes and commercials consisting of kuda.org’s own Branka Ćurčić reading segments of the communist manifesto. Branka has also has provided us with a review of another event that we broadcast earlier in the week.

Branka and Menshavicks kruzok
Following them was a short set by Manovski (MP3) with voice-over in English that he graciously allowed us to cut short.

Manovski live!!
Manovski was followed by AKO (the Alternative Culture Organization)(MP3). Here we see a picture of Zoran Petakov who is also mentioned in the article by Branka that we linked to earlier in this post.

Zoran and Momčilo of AKO
Once AKO got through, Manovski(MP3) was allowed to finish out his previous set while the electronic masterminds of SKIIIIK++ got set up.

SKIIIIK++
SKIIIIK++ then proceeded to blow our minds(MP3). We hope to do some collaborating with them in the near future, but just watching them in action was enough to keep us happy for a while.

The folks from Pogon Kontre
The nice folks from the Serbian fanzine Pogon Kontre(MP3) then took the stage and discussed issues affecting some of the more marginalized populace in Novi Sad’s community. A member of their group, Alexander confided to us that “they made me talk about lesbians.”

Roma rapper Muha, acapella
After Pogon Kontre, LeE talked briefly with Muha (MP3)who is a Roma rapper that we were introduced to by Zelimir Zilnik earlier that same day. He spoke of his position as a Roma rapper in Novi Sad, and even did some acapella rapping for us. Many thanks to kuda.org’s Kristian Lukić for translating.
After LeE’s interview with Muha Jon took the time to chat a bit with SKIIIIK++(MP3). Can’t you just tell how much we love these guys. They even decided to add another + (now SKIIIIK+++) during the interview!

Orfeas runs the board with his mates from the “Feedback!!” show
Finally, after a brief musical interlude the Feedback program by Mikrofonija took the stage and was entertaining even for our Serbian language challenged ears (MP3) ….. Daško and Vlada had been introduced to us by former SanFrancisco resident (soon to be LA movie mogul) Max Fink, and as it happened Orfeas Skutelis of kuda.org had worked with these guys before…so he ran the board. These guys had done a radio program in Novi Sad previously and it showed in the professional pacing and true audio experimentation on display.
What else is there to say, but that we were stunned and amazed and just plain overwhelmed at how excited everyone seemed to be to come out and make some radio. More news and photos will be posted soon, but we really wanted to get this stuff up ASAP. Enjoy!!!
