Events in Serbia!!!

The Audio Constructor Truck
Jon takes a picture of the “Audio Constructor” truck

Our fifth full day in Serbia and we’ve already got some gigs….that is… aside from our ongoing project as “Audio Constructors”…. It should be noted that we really wanted to find a way to bring the truck in the photo above back for use in the states, but alas we will have to settle for our Nissan pickup and Ford Festiva for our Bay Area adventures.

Above is a photo of the Serbian announcement of our upcoming presentation at kuda.org on Friday, and an associated broadcast on Saturday. The text was translated from the original English by kuda’s own Bojan Pušić (you can see some more information about the kuda staff here.

Here is the English for our home town readers:

Presentation by Neighborhood Public Radio at kuda.org on Friday June 10th at 8pm

NPR will discuss U.S. “public” media history as it relates to the current transitional stage of media ownership in Serbia and Montenegro. NPR will explain how to develop your own community radio station with technical demonstrations. Individuals and groups interested in broadcasting their own ideas and programs during NPR’s Saturday broadcast are encouraged to attend.

Broadcast by Neighborhood Public Radio at Gradiliste on Saturday June 11th from 4pm – 9pm

NPR invites the residents of Novi Sad to come participate in a broadcast that features continuous music and talk programming produced by local artists and activists. You can help NPR to create an audio portrait of the local community. Listen to the broadcast live on 96.1 FM .

Our presentation will be in this building but our broadcast will apparently be at a library on the campus of the University of Novi Sad which is now under construction called Gradiliste (which apparently means “construction site”). We’ll try to have pictures of that soon.

As it stands now we will be broadcasting at 96.1. We might also try to have a stream for one or more of the events so that folks can listen in as they wake up back in America. We will be sure to keep you updated as we are aware of new details regarding possible streams.

Aside from the events here in Novi Sad we have a presentation planned for July 1st at Rex - the B92 Culture Lab. Which will be coming fresh off of travelling to Spain with our friends at kuda.org.

We are working on a few other presentations in the area but have nothing else confirmed to report.

We went to see a show at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Novi Sad (also the Museum of the Socialist Revolution… and apparently the home of a great many other cultural institutions in Novi Sad). It was mostly single channel video works by an artist named Vesna Tokin. It was good to go to an opening in Novi Sad and meet several new and interesting people including the very animated and entertaining director of the Museum, Zivko Grozdanic Gera, who was a very friendly and gracious host.

Tomorrow we will go to Belgrade to see the Rex -B92 Cultural Center and a presentation by the Italian Groups Candida TV and BugsLab. Surely we’ll have plenty to report back after that.

So keep coming back for more yummy NPR fun.
