Our last day at the Headlands

Back in the first days of the NPR residency at the Headlands I interviewed Jon Rappleye about his lush, hypnotic, fantastic, mutated woodland paintings, and how they related to his previous residency at the Headlands. I did not ask him about his striking resemblence to David Bowie. Unfortunately the first interview somehow failed to record. So we waited until the other end of the residency, and we tried again. I was now more familiar with his work, and he had a few new Headlands adventures to share. As well as a reputation for David Bowie impersonation.

As usual, we waited until the very end to interview the big cheese. Seems our working from the bottom up approach always means we wait until the very last minute to interview the most important folks. We tried to interview Holly about ghosts… and sure enough that interview did not record.. Holly is fascinating, and has a studio at the Headlands of her own, AND loves almond M&M’s.

After failing to interview Holly we got Gary Sangster, the director of the Headlands Center for the Arts on the mic. Gary described the show of drawings he is currently curating, his understanding of his role as director of the Headlands, and his ideal curatorial opportunity.

And that, my friends brings to a close the magical time we had at the Headlands center for the Arts. We failed to interview everyone who interested us, but managed to enjoy everyone we did interview. We want to be sure to thank and appreciate these people who we didn’t have a chance to appreciate on the air: Anu Vikram for her ongoing belief in and support of NPR, Sharon Maidenberg for being a good neighbor, Casey Flax for keeping it real…fun, Holly Blake for all of her mysterious gifts, Rebecca Lehrer for the fun links and the NY attitude, and Juliette Delventhal for making lots of fantabulous food..even for the extra guests that show up with little notice. The Headlands is a fantastic place for the creation and appreciation of art. Support them!
