Saturday, November 11th - RC01:Relocation (archive)

Our new booth at Southern Exposure
On Saturday November 11th the NPR beast awoke once more to begin an eight month (nearly a gestational period) broadcast run at Southern Exposure gallery at the corner of 25th and Mission. Since we were moving from a fantastic run at ATA that ran from February to August of last year and culminated in our appearance at the ISEA:ZeroOne festival in San Jose; and since Soex had just moved from their digs at Project Artaud, we decided our theme for this first broadcast would be Relocation. The next eight months of projects at Southern Exposure are the result of a collaboration that is funded, in part by the Creative Work Fund. We are calling this project Radio Cartography, and it includes more than just a regular broadcast from our new studio. Check out the other projects we have planned including the Alternate Soundtrack City Tours, State of Mind Stations, and Talking Homes.
November 11th marked the beginning of the festivites with RC01:Relocation and it began with a bang! Unfortunately we have fewer pictures than we might like at the moment, but we are promised more to come.

Linda, Luke and the whole Mars is Heaven production crew
First up was Linda Arnejo and Luke Boyd’s production of “Mars is Heaven”. “Mars is Heaven” was adapted from the Ray Bradbury story of the same name about a group of astronauts who travel to Mars and think they have arrived in heaven. The gallery was filled to the brim with talent and we were off to a sprinting start.

After things calmed down a bit from the high excitement of the live radio play, LeE interviewed Karen Heisler and Marc Tognotti, who own the building that Southern Exposure has moved to and do amazing work to unify communities and enrich their neighborhoods. Marc works with the Neighborhood Assemblies Network, and we are very excited about the possibility of doing something big with them in June. More impotantly, though, Karen works with Pie Ranch. Pie Ranch will be opening a cafe called “Mission Pie”in the building right behind Soex, and works to bring students from Mission High to their farm down on the San Mateo coast to get in touch with the reality of where their food comes from. Karen also brought Melissa, Alex and Andee to talk about their experience of visiting and working at the ranch.

Katina invites Theo, Evelyn, and Juan to discuss immigration
After we started digging in to the delicious pumpkin/red curry squash pie that Karen so graciously provided for us, Katina Papson dubber her show “Image Transfer Sound” and talked with Theo Rigby about his experience workling along the border with Mexico. Unfortunately, the audio from the second half of the interview where Evelyn asked Juan to come join us from his day waiting at Cesar Chavez to be picked up for day work. Juan talked about his experience as an immigrant in San Francisco, and the injustices of U.S. immigration policy. If you get nothing else from this interview, it’s worth noting that many “illegal”immigrants that are supposedly draining our countries rescources without paying anything in taxes, are in fact paying payroll taxes, and ACTUALLY are les likely to be able to avail themselves of free governmental services BECAUSE of their illegal status. makes you “wonder” why we have so much trouble keeping people out of our country, even with a xenophobe like Bush in the office of President.

Michael Starve doing “The Starve Zone”
The technical difficulty for the recording continued through the first half of “The Starve Zone”. Michael Starve talks about the need for our President to be put on “Administrative Leave” like the officers in Queens, NY who fired 50 shots at an unarmed group of men at a strip club. So at least we got that half covered…

Fred Wallace of One Big Man and One Big Truck
“The Starve Zone” was followed by Zefrey Throwell’s conversation with Fred Wallace of One Big Man and One Big Truck movers. Zeffrey learned what a “Lobster Pinch” is, how to wrap a mattress in plastic, and we found out about the unfortunate things that can happen to a puppy when you’re moving.

Whizz speaks with Lupe Arreola from St. Peter’s Housing Committee
Superstar interviewer and the producer for next month’s “Packaging” program Elizabeth Biddlecombe aka Whizz talks to Lupe Arreola from the St. Peter’s Housing Committee about their work serving Spanish-speaking tenants in the Mission. The committee helps people battle illegal evictions and rent increases. The housing committee is a part of Deporten La Migra (Deport the INS Coalition) that protests landlords’ use of the INS as a tool to evict tenants.

After we got done at Southern Exposure, there was an event over at The Lab as part of their Detourned Menu show called the Flavor of Democracy. Here Jerome Wagg and Chris Sollars talk to LeE about the MEdia and the WEdia, and what it’s like to prepare a meal using democratic principles.

Trish Stone rounds out the day by relocating to “Second Life”
Last but not least, almost as a bookend to the sci-fi distopian escape of Mars is Heaven, we see the experience of transplanting yourself to another kind of imaginary world. Trish Stone takes us to the virtual world of Second Life. Close your eyes and listen to the conversation and the sound effects, and you too will be temporarily transported to the outer reaches of the world of Second Life.

It has taken quite some time to get this post up for you all to enjoy, and we do hope you have been kept occupied with the content that we provided for you both through our stream and through our jukebox. Also if you are in the mission with a radio you can listen to re-broadcasts of all of this content on 88.9 FM every weekend. You can also catch broadcasts related to our other projects… specifically State of Mind Stations every Friday evening, Alternate Soundtrack City Tours starting in January, and Talking Homes at select locations throughout the Bay Area.
Thanks as always to all the participants and all the listeners who help to make this so much more worthwhile.
