July 8th, 2006
Hi,
This week’s audio is streaming at our Live 365 site.
The day started rather inauspiciously with the presence of a missing connector in the proceedings and men loudly collecting rubble outside the building.

The builders working hard on a sweltering day…
But the one-and-only Cesar Ascarrunz arrived promptly at 12 noon to bring his now-familiar sound to the station. He played his favorite latin tunes and spoke of friends in the Bay Area.
At the very same time that the host country’s team was playing Portugal in the World Cup, NPR went over to Germany for its next program. Lee Montgomery and Jon Brumit, two of the originators of NPR, are in the country at the moment and recorded this program over there.

NPR volunteer Dave in his very shiny shirt
From two to three pm, NPR went freestyle for an hour with music and chat from Dave, Whizz and some passers-by, one of whom claimed to be the literary hoax, JT Leroy. Was she? Hard to know. Next NPR volunteers Dave and Whizz continued in front of the microphones with thoughts on the world of hippies versus punks.

Joe Tougas plays his sonic concoctions
Joe Tougas was up next to play his ‘Soundscapes’. These sonic concoctions have a political message and champion independent media, which is very fitting given the totally independent nature of NPR.

ISA students wait for ‘friends’ time again
We then returned to that episode of friends once again courtesy of students from the Independent School of Art. They went multi-lingual on us and read the script in Spanish. This slowed the progress of the Spanish-speaking builders outside the window as they strained to listen.

Katina Karaoke rocks the street again
After that our karaoke star, Ms Katina, took to the street again. She had an unusual accompaniment this week: bangs, crashes and the engine roar of the builders and their truck. But the show must go on and it did nevertheless.
The technology gods really forsook the station around the five o’clock hour when problems appeared in all areas of operation. This upset the next host, Ben Martin, no end.

Erick gets a passer-by to put on a wig and try a song
But after that, San Francisco actor Erick Casanova lightened the mood with his discussion of independent theater. After treating us to his self-penned song, ‘Take a Pill’, he put on a silly hat and went out onto the street to get theatrical.
And finally, NPR’s very own DJ Milton Parker brought his usual mix-up of soothing and not-so-soothing sounds to round out the day with an hour of music.
