Jerome Waag of Chez Panisse makes “We the People” pasta with Kelsie Kerr and their young assistants Ella and Stella
Things really seem to be heating up for us over at ATA. The 22nd was one of our best shows ever. We had cooking demonstrations, cab drivers, noisey noise, a Nigerian country singer, extensive discussions of anal penetration, and sperm donation, and a little discussion of keeping our public media public.
The day started with Jerome Waag, a chef from Chez Panisse restaurant inviting some friends into our booth to cook some democratic pasta. As the day wore on it became affectionately known as “We the People” pasta.
We cleared our production table and laid out the necessary supplies, and Jerome and Kelsie Kerr showed Ella and Stella how to make the pasta dough, and then imprint the preamble to the constitution into the pasta. Once the preamble was imprinted onto the pasta it was split into individual lines and placed to dry in the window for the rest of the day. Careful listeners might here the results of occassionally falling pasts in the other broadcasts that were done later in the day.(MP3)
We had to get the equipment moved from behind the studio to the table that jerome was using to make the pasta. It was quite a mystical and magical feat getting everything quickly swapped over. As is often our concern we had some difficulties with the broadcast and Jon abley filled the in-between time with some improvisation with found sounds.(MP3)

Kristin Lucas and one of her recently infected patients.
Kristen Lucas has been an invaluable volunteer for the station, in addition to being an accomplished artist in her own right. Today she set-up a triage clinic at ATA and invited people in off the street to become infected with the Neighborhood Public Radio virus. She interviewed visitors and spread the disease with the efficiency of a bird carrying avian flu. Here Kristin announces the transmission of a highly contagious virus that is effecting the entire mission district, and invites folks to come on down to her triage center where “we are giving away free infections, free infections”. Musical accompaniment was provided by Scott Hewicker on the Omniboard. Scott joined us last week as well when the Alps played for “Preserving our Cultural Heritage” (MP3)

Whizz speaks with a woman passing by about her booty preferences.
Beginiing with the quote ‘What man doesn’t like alot of meat to pull on when he’s in the bedroom?” and a little Destiny’s Child, Elizabeth Biddlecombe aka Whizz spent 30 minutes exploring people’s preferences with regard to booties…and we don’t mean pirate treasure… She even grabbed the wireless mic and went out on the street to get the opinions of passers-by. Apparently we are living in the age of the booty.(MP3)

Ola Hassan sings country songs and talks about his family’s Nigerian origins
Unfortunately we had some recording problems again and did not get the fantastic performance of Ola Hassan in our window. We can always tell how good a performance is by how many people stop in front of the window, and Ola had a small crowd of clapping fans throughout his set. Hopefully Ola will come back some time with more of his intense country stylings.

Jon Brumit and Luke Powell talk about cab driving.
Our recording equipment briefly returned in the middle of Jon Brumit’s conversation with cab driver LukePowell ….. Luke performed on the final day of our 6 week broadcast at Southern Exposure last year, and was a real hit. This time around he talked about some of his more interesting experiences as a cab driver.(MP3)
And of course if we have audio we probably don’t have a picture, and so you’ll just have to trust us when we tell you that Zefrey had Lindsey Burns and her friend Torey in the window studio on Valencia Street. Lindsey works for Juxtapoz magazine but seemed a little reluctant to talk about it. She seemed generally reluctant about her interview (probably why she asked her friend to sit with her, but not speak). Zefrey kept his cool, though and managed. Check it out. to fill a good long half hour(MP3)
After Zefrey’s Fucking Midget the infamous Too Bobs got into the studio and made some noise. It was their first public appearance in several months. The last performance was probably back in Germany. (Stay tuned for info about a return to Germany this summer). Unfortunately, only a small portion of the set was recorded. But trust us. It’s a good portion. (MP3)

Violet Blue talks about anal sex with Tristan Taormino.
Before her show this week Violet Blue asked if she could do a phone interview. “I’ll look pretty in the window and talk about butt sex, I promise!”, she said. Well, she came through. What more can a person ask for when innocently walking down Valencia street than to be lured over to the NPR window by the beautifully straight haired and intellectually spectacled educator who is giggling and smiling while discussing the finer points of anal sex with the woman who produced the film “House of Ass”, Tristan Taormino. Really, I ask you, what more can you ask for? (MP3)
And what better way to follow up a half hour of vigorous butt sex talk, than a one hour set of the music of DJ Milton Parker. As always an eclectic, disturbing, sonic assault, with sugary sweet morsels of happiness. (MP3)
Since we were running late this week, Dee Dee Russell came on in the evening. I think she was even doing some sort of an Earth Day celebration too. (n.b. we failed to celebrate Earth Day, and apologize half heartedly to any and all who were/are offended). Check out the magic when Dee Dee Russel tells you where to stick it. (MP3)
This week we teamed up with Other Cinema’s presentation of Pranks and Hoaxes and the like and interviewed some of the show’s visitors and recorded some of their presentations. We started by interviewing Tom Borden about his videos that document him sitting in his own urine in major corporate shopping venues, donating his semen to a sperm bank, preserving his own fast-food formed feces, and napping in the middle of downtown SanFrancisco. (MP3)
And last but not least, we did an interview with Michael and Aphid from Metavid, who are generating a slightly altered but highly searchable archive of the proceedings on C-SPAN. Did you have any idea that accessing the archives of C-SPAN’s programs actually costs money? Well, now it doesn’t. Or, at least some of it doesn’t. Many thanks to Michael and Aphid for their hard work in capturing it and making it not only accessible but searchable. Here is a bit of the interview.(MP3)… and here is their presentation to the fine folks assembled at ATA.(MP3)
And that about does it for this week. We’ll keep broadcasting from our window at ATA for as long as we can keep paying the rent. And we hope you’ll keep coming by to see it. Next week… Marina Grzinic and Billboard Liberation Front….(and maybe even a special guest or two).
